In 2009 the Bilkent University Preparatory School became the Bilkent Laboratory School – Ankara. BLIS is governed by a School Board which consists of administrators of Bilkent University and BLIS. The Chair of the School Board is the Rector of Bilkent University, a private, English-medium university. The original school opened in September 1993. It was designed to provide an English-medium education with an international perspective for Turkish and international students. The school's location on the campus of one of Turkey's leading universities means that the staff and students have access to the wide range of educational and social facilities which the university offers. The school is led by the Director General together with a team of Turkish and international divisional administrators. The Pre-School consists of Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten which are English immersion classes. Grades 1-5 have a bilingual program in English and Turkish. There is also an international program in the elementary school for international students. The Elementary Division, Pre-K – Grade 5, is authorized by the IB to offer the PYP. In the Middle School the curricula are taught in English and structured for a multi-cultural community. Turkish language and literature and Turkish social sciences are taught throughout the middle and high school to Turkish students. The IGCSE curriculum is required in Grades 9 and 10 and the IB Diploma Program is required in Grades 11 and 12 for all students. Students must earn the IB Diploma to qualify for a BLIS diploma. Competition for admission is keen; the entrance exams are demanding. The school has computer facilities based on a networked PC system and is connected through terminals to the computers of Bilkent University Computer Center. There are extensive sports facilities including a fitness center with training equipment. The Performance Wing includes an auditorium and seating for 300, music and drama practice rooms and dressing rooms. The building of a new middle school is planned for completion in 2010. International students are encouraged to enroll. Turkish students form the majority of the student body. All graduates continue to universities which include the best in the US, UK, Canada and Turkey. |
