Kennedy International School is an English-language boarding and day school. Within a home-like environment, students develop the skills and work habits necessary to become continuous learners, while preparing for entrance into university-preparatory secondary schools. JFK has adopted the International Primary Curriculum, which is designed especially for international schools. This curriculum is based on a clear philosophy of international education in a time of rapid global change and reflects recent developments in understanding how the brain works and how children learn. Kennedy School teachers are experienced in the methods necessary to teach in multi-level, differentiated academic programs. French is taught from grade one and English as a Second Language is a specialty. The learning process is expanded beyond the classroom by drawing fully on the resources of the local Alpine community and through sports, outdoor activities and excursions. The student population of seventy children, approximately 25 of whom are boarders, is composed of some twenty-four different nationalities. There are six classroom units, each of ten to fourteen students. Located in the village of Saanen, three kilometers from the well-known resort town of Gstaad, the school is housed in typical Bernese chalets. Facilities include modern classrooms, an eight thousand volume library, computer lab and an art room. Adjacent to the Boarding Chalet is a two-acre playing field and basketball half court. Within a few minutes of the school are more than 60 ski lifts, unlimited hiking and excursion possibilities, the local gymnasium, outdoor and indoor swimming pools and tennis courts, plus ballet, music and horse riding schools. The school year runs from mid-September to the end of June, with four-week vacation periods at Christmas and Easter . Acceptance is based on previous school records, recommendations and personal interviews. During July and August a summer camp programme is offered, combining language instruction in English or French with variety of sports, outdoor education and excursions. Winter sports and educational programs are also available through our sister organization Lovell Camps. |
