Taught by a graduate faculty, which is half Japanese and half Western, students complete their secondary education in one of two ways: they may follow either the Japanese system to enter universities in Japan, or the US system, to enter universities in the USA, Canada and the UK. All graduates proceed to university. English is the official language of the school and students are encouraged to use it, while continuing to improve their first language skills. Designed and built in 1990, the school has a central teaching and administration building, which houses classrooms, science and computer laboratories and a cafeteria. A second building was added in 2000 which has a multi-purpose hall, art room, computer room, music rooms and further classrooms. Accommodation is in two dormitories, in which all rooms have a private bathroom; and well-equipped recreation rooms with cooking facilities. Each dormitory also has a Jacuzzi. Volleyball, basketball, soccer, track and field, tennis, swimming and intensive skiing are practised in season and in competition with other international schools in the region. Non-competitive sports include mountain-biking, horse-riding, ice-skating and martial arts. The school has a highly acclaimed stage production each year, which is in English and is a huge challenge for second language learners. There are four- or five-day cultural trips twice yearly to major cities in Switzerland and in other European countries. Cultural activities include art, drama, school choir and social services. There are two volunteer humanitarian trips per year, to India and Zambia. Students are individually cared for by Homeroom teachers and by faculty 'families' - small groups with teacher-parents who meet frequently and sometimes eat together or go bowling or to a cinema. A House Mother and House Father have special responsibility for the dormitories. Two school nurses and a school doctor ensure complete medical care. |
