Study at the Academy of Korean StudiesThe Graduate School is located on the campus of the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) and was established to provide education for young scholars in Korean studies in 1980 by the Korean government. The school offers a joint
Master's-Doctoral program, and other non-degree programs in the
humanities and social sciences. Generally, there are a total of
about 160 students, 30 or so of whom are international students
from various countries. Degrees Offered and Fields of Specialization The school runs a joint M. A. /
Ph. D. degree program into which all students are enrolled with the aim
of acquiring a doctoral degree in their chosen specialty. Students
are encouraged to aim to graduate with a Ph. D but on occasion, some do
aim for the M. A. Departments & Program Fields 1. History -- Korean
History/Archeology, Archival Management of Ancient Documents * Newly established program.
This program is focussed on educating students who are interested in
promoting Korean Studies abroad. Students of this program can choose one of
the above 14 fields for their majors.
1. Applicants should hold a B. A. degree or higher awarded from a four year university prior to
entering AKS (including Korean nationals with
permanent resident status in foreign countries). 2. Those applicants who already
possess an M. A. degree from a recognized university are expected to
continue in the same direction of study. Academic
Studies 1. School terms run from early
March to late August, and from early September to late February of the
following year, as the first and second semesters respectively. 3. Although applicants are
allowed to apply for different fields of specialization from their B. A.,
those who already hold an M. A. degree from a recognized university in
the same major for which they wish to apply can gain recognition of 24
credits towards their Ph. D. 4(a). All students are expected
to write their dissertations in Korean. However there may be an
occasional exception to this rule. Studies are expected to write
their dissertations in English.

transcript(s) (printed in Korean or English) 5. Study plan: Be aware that
your study plan carries great weight and should include your
past research experience along with your intended
research proposal. It should be written in Korean (in English for the Program of
International Korean Studies) and be about five A4 pages long. 6. Two letters of recommendation
are required from either Korean or non-Korean professors,
at least one of which must be written by a professor from the last
university the applicant attended. Recommendations must be forwarded
directly by the referees (those submitted by applicants will be
invalid). 7. Assessment of Korean language
skills: Applicants are required to
submit their report card of the Korean Proficiency Test conducted by
KICE (Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation). Otherwise, ask your Korean
Studies' lecturer / professor to complete the evaluation sheet
attached to the application form. 8. Four photos (5cm*7cm)
