There are 3 broad themes and 7 concentrations within the Master of Public Health.
TEACHING AND LEARNING
The inter- and multi-disciplinary nature of public health is emphasized in the teaching approach and course design. The courses are broadly based and student centred. Modules are designed to encourage breadth, depth, application, synthesis, originality of approach, self-motivation and self-learning. The mode of teaching for all specialized and elective modules is problem-based learning. Students are encouraged to take full advantage of the information technology facilities and library resources provided by the University.
PROGRAMME FACULTY
Academic staff from the Department of Community Medicine, Clinical Trials Centre, Centre of Infection, Department of Microbiology and honorary staff from the Medical Library, Hospital Authority (including Directors, Hospital Chief Executives, senior members of HA specialist teams) and Department of Health (including consultants and senior staff) form the core of the teaching staff.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for admission, a candidate shall (a) possess the relevant necessary requirements which comply with the General Regulations, (b) hold a Bachelor's degree with honours or the degrees of MBBS of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), or another qualification of equivalent standard from HKU or from another University or comparable institution accepted for this purpose, (c) obtain a score of 550 or above in the paper-based test or 213 or above in the computer-based test in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (within 2 years before submission of the application) if seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English, and (d) satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination if required.
Exemptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
PROGRAMME DURATION
The programme lasts for 1 year for full-time or 2 years for part-time candidates and consists of a minimum of 400 hours of prescribed work (i.e. Modules: 200 hours; Dissertation: 200 hours). Although flexible teaching schedules are offered most teaching is held on weekday evenings and Saturday.
