A Tradition of Excellence in Education

Saint Ignatius College is proud of its unique position in the Geelong region as the only Catholic and co-educational Secondary College and also as the only Jesuit Partner school in association with Xavier College melbourne. Over 900 young women and men can reap the benefits of the time-honoured intellectually impressive Ignatian tradition of education focusing on educational excellence integrity and Ignatian Spirituality. Located in a natural rural setting and easily reached by an extensive bus network saint Ignatius College students are challenged to excel by one of the giants of the Church the 16th century Spanish courtier and soldier st Ignatius of Loyola and supported in the college by both a Director and Assistant Director of Mission. The motto "Faith learning and Community" effectively mirrors the educational philosophy which nurtures a pathway of development of the whole student in academic physical social cultural and spiritual domains all within a motivating and supportive environment. At Saint Ignatius College the vision and mission is to form young people of high levels of competence conscience and compassion who will be of service to others. Christian values spirituality and personal growth are central to the school ideals and all students participate in Religious education classes which provide a basis for dealing with the uncertainties of our ever-changing world. As part of the Ignatian tradition the Saint Ignatius College community is called to strive for “the Magis” -a calling to strive to be one’s best for more universal good and a more generous service to others.

Curriculum

Saint Ignatius College encourages a rigorous and comprehensive approach to continual program development in the pursuit of first-rate educational outcomes supported by a broad curriculum tailored to meet the needs of students at each stage of schooling and strong pastoral care program. The Middle School caters for Years 7 and 8 students and focuses on building foundation skills through a range of core subjects and exposure to a range of Arts and Technology skills. Year 9 students located in a separate precinct work to further develop their strengths talents and attributes. Significant and popular are the activity-based activities that support and complement their curriculum. Recent experiences have included coastal walks camping and Melbourne discovery programs. The college offers an extensive range of VCE vET and VCAL Studies. Located in the Senior School precinct is the Work and Further Education (WAFE) and careers co-ordinators. Information Technology is integral across the college with a laptop program for all year levels. Recent initiatives included the introduction of Italian Language to the language school.

Student welfare programs

The College takes great pride in its Pastoral Care system with a student counsellor available. The country grounds are divided into areas where students of all levels mingle together and other areas where they can mix with friends of their own age group. The Middle School (Years 7 and 8) homeroom teachers instruct students in many of their core subjects in their homeroom and provide a stable environment for confidence to develop as they grow. The homeroom encourages a more personal school experience and consequently students are nurtured in their endeavours both as students and as individuals. Year 9 and Senior School students in Years 10 and 12 continue to be supported by the strong Pastoral Care system led by the Heads of Schools assistant leaders at each year level as well as homeroom teachers. Christian values are an important part of the school philosophy and a Social Justice Student Group is active on local and wider issues. The school develops leadership through the SRC class Captains school Leaders House Leaders sports Team and Community Service Leaders. Year 7&8 students enjoy the Parent evenings throughout the year.

Sport

A variety of sports is available with initial emphasis placed on participation in a range of traditional sports. Through affiliations with other sporting organisations and other colleges students compete at a variety of increasing standards.

Extra-curricular activities

Activities include leadership and local and overseas Social Justice community projects public Speaking debating sports chess award-winning Performing Arts productions orchestra choir and overseas language tours community service and immersion tours.

Facilities

Numerous new buildings and facilities in recent years reflect the ongoing pursuit to provide enriching experiences and opportunities for students. The College is proud of these additions including the more recent Year 10 precinct comprising 8 classrooms numerous staffrooms and presentation rooms and inclusions to the extensive sporting facilities of recent grass tennis courts and fitness centre. The magnificent Drysdale Catholic Church recently constructed on the College grounds is used extensively. Imminent is the building of a new Middle School precinct (Year 7&8) to consist of 16 classrooms staffrooms and associated facilities and outdoor areas.
